Allen E. Reed, Jr., beloved husband of Ellen (Gross) Reed, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of Allen E. Reed and Arline (Genthner) Reed. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Susan R. Campbell and grandson Brendan Campbell of Mr. Pleasant SC, by his son Allen H. Reed and his wife Catherine and granddaughter, Sarah Reed of Bay St. Louis, MS, and by his son Matthew D. Reed of Sudbury, MA. Al is also survived by his sister Louise Reed of Weston, MA. He was predeceased by his sister Susan Moore. Al was salutatorian of his high school class at Bordentown Military Institute. He was a proud 1956 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and was a member of the Academy's 1954 undefeated national championship lacrosse team. Upon graduation he served 4 years as a U.S. Naval Aviator and spent16 more years in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Commander. Not surprisingly, two of Al's greatest lifetime pleasures were aviation and lacrosse. In addition to flying single engine airplanes, he was a volunteer at the New England Air Museum at Bradley Field. He played lacrosse for Connecticut Valley Lacrosse Club as a goalie and served the Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association for 30 years as a high school and college referee and a mentor to many aspiring fellow lacrosse officials. Al was employed at Chandler Evans in West Hartford and retired from Hamilton Standard in Windsor in 1992. A service to celebrate Al's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 10th at the Poquonock Community Church, 1817 Poquonock Ave. Windsor. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society , 25 Brook St., Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or to VNA Health Care/Hospice, 1290 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, CT 06109. Interment will be on 21 June in Linwood Cemetery, Weston, MA.
