Matt served in ROCHESTER (CA-124), and as Aide and Flag
Lieutenant to Commander Amphibious Group One in San Diego, before resigning in
1960. He returned to his home in
Shamokin PA, and joined his father in a lumber and construction company, of
which he was president from 1965 until 1992.
In his “semi-retirement,” he was construction supervisor and coordinator
for the Shamokin Housing Authority, and then construction inspection supervisor
for the PA Dept of General Services. He also
raised Christmas trees on his 40-acre farm.
Matt was an avid outdoorsman, fishing and hunting
extensively in the US and Canada. He was
also a great contributor in his hometown area, with member/directorships in
many civic and sporting organizations.
He had been battling cancer for a year when he left us, and is survived
by a daughter Victoria, of Shamokin; son Dr Mattison III of Ithaca NY; brothers
Thomas ’53, and Robert, who have both since passed away; and five
grandchildren, including twin grandsons born three weeks after his death.
